During his high school years, Art won an Outstanding Soloist Award at the 2000 Essentially Ellington Festival in New York City and played in the New York State All-State Jazz Ensemble. He was also co-winner of the Rochester Area Young Jazz Artist competition in 2001, and, as a result, performed as a guest soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra “Pops” that in a concert directed by Jeff Tyzik.

After high school, Art auditioned for the U.S. Navy Music Program and then enlisted in the Navy with a rating of MU (Musician).  He was stationed with Navy Band Northeast in Newport, RI, where he served from January 2002 to July 2006.  Here he gained a wealth of performing experience with the Show Band, Ceremonial Band, Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and several small jazz groups.  He was Junior Sailor of the Year for both Navy Band Northeast and Navy Region Northeast in 2002, for which he received a Navy Achievement Medal.  He received a second Navy Achievement Medal in 2006, and was honorably discharged in August that same year.

Following his years in the Navy Music Program, Art attended Berklee College of Music from 2006-2009, earning a B.A. in Jazz Composition. While at Berklee, he played in and composed music for The Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, directed by Greg Hopkins, and the legendary Rainbow Band, directed by Phil Wilson. He also received the Herb Pomeroy Award and Wayne Shorter Award for achievement in jazz composition.

Art followed up with a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies from New England Conservatory, graduating in 2011. While at NEC, he studied with Jerry Bergonzi, Miguel Zenón, Frank Carlberg and Ken Schaphorst, and performed in the NEC Jazz Orchestra.

After graduating from New England Conservatory, Art taught lessons around the Boston area and performed extensively with The Beantown Swing Orchestra and the wedding band East Coast Soul, among other groups, from 2011-2015. In August of 2015, he had the honor of performing in the horn section with The Four Tops and The Temptations for two shows in Massachusetts. Later that month, he and his family relocated to Rochester, NY, where he and his wife grew up, and Art is thrilled to be near family again and also excited to develop his music career in his native city.
